Jelina Haines is a Filipino-born Australian with an ancestral link to Indigenous Americas, Mexico. Jelina Haines received her PhD in Computer Science and Technology at the School of UniSA – STEM, University of South Australia and was an invited scholar at the University of Arizona, USA. Jelina has 21 years of live-in experience working alongside the Indigenous Elders community as a project lead manager, cultural curator/liaison, art instructor/product developer, and visual art designer to preserve specified cultural heritage and traditional knowledge. Jelina’s research expertise is in qualitative community-based participatory research and video ethnography of Indigenous human information behaviour, user experience and design needs, and redefined traditional learning by merging art and technology. She uses video dialogue interviews and data visualization of living culture, tradition, and history, integrating Storytellers’ voices, experiences and practices shared in their unique social and cultural context.
She received several awards in the academic and creative industries for her contributions to the research field and the Indigenous communities. Notable awards include the 2022 ASIS&T ProQuest Doctoral Dissertation Award, Best Information Behavior Conference Early Career Paper Award (SIG-USE) and Michael Miller Medal – High Commendation Award (STEM Academic Unit) in recognition of the most exceptional PhD thesis, University of South Australia.
Notably, Jelina has left an indelible mark on her field through contributions to esteemed journals and conferences and by successfully securing substantial project funding. Her involvement in various committees and projects underscores her commitment to advancing her areas of expertise.
